Possums
The possum is more properly known as the Virginia opossum. It is the only marsupial found in Florida and will generally have 2 litters of 7-11 babies each litter per year. Possums love to climb and are very good at it, which makes them a common, yet unwanted, resident of attics. Possums are mainly nocturnal and are opportunistic omnivores, which means they will eat pretty much anything.
Possums can do a very large amount of damage in a short period of time, and are the most common animal found dead in attics and under homes in Florida. Unlike raccoons, possums will urinate and defecate all over an attic, potentially ruining all of the insulation. Possums will also tear into ductwork and defecate inside it as well, putting anyone in the home at risk to breathing in the toxins the possums leave behind. Possums also carry more fleas than any other animal, leaving your home susceptible to an infestation.
Risks for diseases such as toxoplasmosis, leptospirosis and salmonella are also serious factors to consider when dealing with possums. It is not recommended to go into an attic where possums may have been without a respirator, which is why it is best to leave possum removal and clean up to the professionals.
